At Grand New Flag, we proudly celebrate the symbols that unite us as a country. Learn more about the history, meaning, and ongoing relevance of the Pledge of Allegiance.

What is the Pledge of Allegiance?

The Pledge of Allegiance is a statement of loyalty to the United States, most often recited by children at the start of the school day or during public events. The current version of the Pledge of Allegiance is as follows:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation
under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The Pledge is typically recited while facing the American Flag with your right hand over your heart.

When Was the Pledge of Allegiance Written?

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892, most often credited to Francis Bellamy. The Pledge was originally written for the Columbian Exposition which marked the 400 year anniversary of Christopher Columbus arriving in the Americas.

The first version of the Pledge of Allegiance read:

I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Since being written, the Pledge of Allegiance has undergone multiple changes. In 1923, it was changed from “my Flag” to “the Flag of the United States of America”. It experienced further changes in 1954 under President Dwight Eisenhower to become the version we know today.

When Was “Under God” Added to the Pledge of Allegiance?

The phrase "under God" was added in 1954 during the Cold War by President Eisenhower. Eisenhower felt that adding the phrase “under God” would differentiate the United States from communist countries which he felt to be “Godless”.

What Does the Pledge of Allegiance Represent in America?

The Pledge of Allegiance is an expression of loyalty and commitment to the United States and its foundational ideals. When recited, it signifies an individual’s dedication to the country, its flag, and its democratic principles.
